Tofu steaks
Ingredients
- 450g extra firm tofu
- 1 stock cube
- 4 tbsp boiling water
- 2 tbsp light brown sugar
- 1 tbsp tomato puree
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tsp liquid smoke
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp vegan Worcestershire
- ½ tsp ground black pepper
- ½ tsp fine sea salt
- 40g vegan butter
Steps
- Drain and press the tofu. Pat dry and slice into four pieces.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the vegan stock cube, boiling water and light brown sugar.
- Add the remaining ingredients except for the vegan butter and whisk again.
- Pour the marinade over the tofu and use a pastry brush to make sure each steak is coated on all sides.
- Cover the tofu with a lid and leave to marinate in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
- Heat a grill pan or frying pan over medium heat until very hot.
- Add the vegan butter and swirl around in the pan.
- Fry the tofu steaks, two at a time, for around 3-4 minutes on each side, basting as needed.
