Ingredients

  • 450g extra firm tofu
  • 1 stock cube
  • 4 tbsp boiling water
  • 2 tbsp light brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp tomato puree
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp vegan Worcestershire
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp fine sea salt
  • 40g vegan butter

Steps

  1. Drain and press the tofu. Pat dry and slice into four pieces.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the vegan stock cube, boiling water and light brown sugar.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients except for the vegan butter and whisk again.
  4. Pour the marinade over the tofu and use a pastry brush to make sure each steak is coated on all sides.
  5. Cover the tofu with a lid and leave to marinate in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
  6. Heat a grill pan or frying pan over medium heat until very hot.
  7. Add the vegan butter and swirl around in the pan.
  8. Fry the tofu steaks, two at a time, for around 3-4 minutes on each side, basting as needed.
